President's Message

Standing for the Profession

Jennifer MacMillan, EA

Fall 2025, President's Message, advocacy, representation, practice management

Jennifer MacMillanAs we approach the end of another eventful year, I find myself reflecting not only on the progress we’ve made but also on the core reasons why so many of us became enrolled agents (EAs) in the first place: to hold a credential that demonstrates tax expertise and strengthens the integrity of the tax system.

Representation and deep knowledge of tax law is at the heart of everything we do…as practitioners and as members of this association. We advise, guide, and represent our clients before the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). We represent high standards of professionalism and ethics in our daily work. And through the National Association of Enrolled Agents (NAEA), we represent the interests of enrolled agents in Washington, D.C., and beyond. That kind of representation matters. It shapes how policymakers view our profession. It opens doors. It ensures that when regulations are written, someone at the table is speaking up for you.

This year, the NAEA has made significant strides in its advocacy efforts. Whether through public comment on proposed IRS regulations, meetings with legislators, or active involvement in coalition work, our voice is being heard. That’s not by accident; it’s because of you, our members. Your dues, your volunteer time, and your grassroots engagement fuel this work.

At the same time, we’ve made internal progress: growing our partnerships, strengthening our affiliate relationships (welcome back, California Society of Enrolled Agents (CSEA)!), and building programs that help you serve your clients better. Chapters are now up and running in many states, with education programs and networking opportunities receiving great reviews. The profession is changing, and we’re working hard to ensure that the NAEA evolves as well.

Our public awareness efforts continue to move forward with the launch of the Enrolled Agent Advocate podcast, blog posts, and increased advertising on social media. We are working toward National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) approval for the National Tax Practice Institute™ (NTPI®) so that we can expand the reach and recognition of the program. The Education Foundation is awarding more scholarships than ever before to nurture new enrolled agents and bring them into the fold.

As 2026 approaches, I encourage you to stay engaged. Participate in affiliate and chapter events, as well as webinars. Attend a high school career day using the NAEA fact sheets and merchandise for outreach to students. Make sure you “Save the Date” for the 2026 Fly-In Days on May 5 and 6, and for the Tax Summit next July. Talk about the NAEA with colleagues, because the more united we are, the more powerful our voice becomes.

As the year draws to a close, I encourage you to take time not only to celebrate your successes but also to reflect on your practice. What worked well, what could improve, and where you want to grow in the year ahead. This season of evaluation is a gift we rarely give ourselves amid the daily grind, yet it’s essential for building stronger, more sustainable firms and careers. Let the NAEA be part of that process. Whether you’re looking for professional education, practice management tools, or a renewed connection with your peers, we’re here to support you.

Together, let’s step into the new year with purpose, pride, and a commitment to raising the bar for ourselves, for our clients, and the enrolled agent profession.
