President's Message

A Constant in a Sea of Change

Jennifer MacMillan, EA

Winter 2025, President's Message, advocacy, One Big Beautiful Bill Act, 2025 tax season, OBBBA

If it feels like every time you blink, a new hurdle is placed in front of you, you’re not alone. On top of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) and technical corrections, significant tax legislation might — or might not — be in the cards for the end of 2025 as well. The rapid pace of change lately is enough to make anyone’s head spin! Between new laws, delayed guidance, and shifting Internal Revenue Service (IRS) priorities, it sometimes feels like we’re all working on a moving target. And with uncertainty about IRS operations still hanging in the air, tax professionals everywhere are wondering just what this filing season will bring.

Fortunately, through all of this, one thing remains constant: The National Association of Enrolled Agents (NAEA) is here for you. Whether it’s breaking down the latest legislation, advocating on your behalf in Washington and beyond, or providing timely education to help you interpret new guidance, our primary goal is to support you so you can focus on supporting your clients. Our staff, volunteers, and instructors work tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure members have the tools, information, and community they need to thrive, no matter how unpredictable the tax landscape becomes.

And remember, help is just a few clicks away. The NAEA WebBoard and our members-only Facebook groups are terrific places to ask questions, share insights, or commiserate about the latest “what were they thinking?” moment. Sometimes the best guidance — and the best laugh of the day — comes from someone who’s right there in the trenches with you.

I also want to take a moment to recognize and thank the many volunteers who keep our association running strong. Serving in leadership, on a committee, or as a speaker brings benefits that go far beyond the tangible. The connections you make, the satisfaction of giving back, and the deeper understanding you gain of our profession and its impact are rewards that can’t be measured on any balance sheet. If you’ve ever thought about getting involved at the affiliate, chapter, or national level, I encourage you to take that step. Your perspective and passion are what make the NAEA thrive.

We may not know exactly what Congress or the IRS will do next, but we do know that NAEA members will rise to the challenge…as we always do. As filing season approaches, please take advantage of all the resources available through the NAEA. Together, we’ll navigate the changes, uphold the highest standards of our profession, and continue to make a difference in the lives of the taxpayers we serve.

And finally, while you’re taking care of your clients, don’t forget to take care of yourself, too. Step away from your desk when you can, connect with your colleagues, and remember that this community stands with you through every twist and turn of the season.

Warm wishes for a successful (and maybe even enjoyable) tax season!
