President's Message

New Beginnings, New Opportunities

Emily Aprea, EA

Fall 2026, President's Message, advocacy, practice management

Emily Aprea, EAI have always viewed the fall season as a time of new beginnings. It is when students return to the classroom, families settle back into their routines, and many of us return to work after a well-earned summer break. It is also an ideal time to reflect on where we are as an organization, celebrate our progress, and look ahead to the opportunities before us.

As Congress returns from its summer recess, the National Association of Enrolled Agents (NAEA) remains focused on one of our highest legislative priorities: establishing minimum standards for paid tax preparers. While the legislative process is rarely fast, and often slows further during a midterm election year, we remain committed to advancing the message that taxpayers deserve qualified, ethical tax professionals who meet consistent competency standards. Meaningful minimum standards will protect taxpayers, strengthen public confidence, and reinforce the value of professional tax preparation.

The NAEA also continues to collaborate closely with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to improve the taxpayer experience and ensure that tax professionals have the resources they need to effectively serve their clients. As an active member of the Coalition for Trusted Tax Preparation, we work alongside other professional organizations and industry partners to advocate for sound tax administration and to ensure that the voices of enrolled agents (EAs) are represented in discussions that shape our profession.

While our national advocacy efforts remain a priority, some of the most exciting work is taking place at the state level. Across the country, our affiliates are developing innovative programs that strengthen membership, foster professional development, and build a stronger community of enrolled agents.

The Texas Society of Enrolled Agents (TxSEA) is introducing an academic membership category and partnering with universities to promote the enrolled agent credential and inspire the next generation of tax professionals. The New York State Society of Enrolled Agents (NYSSEA) hosts a monthly new EA mixer, providing newly credentialed enrolled agents with opportunities to network, build relationships, and discover the many benefits of active membership. Meanwhile, the Connecticut Society of Enrolled Agents (CtSEA) has launched monthly in-person networking events at rotating locations across the state, making it easier for members to connect without traveling long distances. The Massachusetts Chapter of Enrolled Agents (MacEA) has been partnering with other professional groups to give EAs an opportunity to expand their networks and increase awareness of EAs.

These initiatives demonstrate the creativity and dedication of our affiliates. More importantly, they reinforce an important truth: when our affiliates, chapters, and national organization work together, we create a stronger association and a stronger profession.

The need for enrolled agents has never been greater. Tax law continues to grow more complex, while the IRS faces ongoing resource constraints and increasing demands for modernization. As America’s Tax Experts ®, enrolled agents play a vital role in helping taxpayers understand their rights and responsibilities while providing expert representation before the IRS.

Together, we will continue to strengthen our profession, advocate for meaningful change, and ensure that enrolled agents remain the premier advocates for taxpayers across the nation.
