EVP Message

What Is a Political Action Committee and Why It Matters

Megan Killian

Fall 2026, EVP Message, advocacy, NAEA PAC

Megan KillianWhen Congress considers changes to the tax code, Internal Revenue Service (IRS) funding, or tax administration, decisions are influenced by more than policy papers and testimony. They are also shaped by relationships that are built over time through conversations between legislators and the tax professionals who serve taxpayers every day.

A political action committee (PAC) is one of many tools that allows the National Association of Enrolled Agents (NAEA) to advance the interests of the enrolled agent profession. It does not replace our grassroots advocacy, our relationships with the IRS and Treasury, or the expertise we bring to policymakers. Instead, it complements those efforts by helping us build and maintain relationships with members of Congress who have a direct role in shaping tax policy.

The NAEA PAC is funded entirely through voluntary contributions from eligible members. Federal law prohibits the use of membership dues to support a federal PAC, making voluntary member participation essential.

The PAC supports candidates from both political parties, and contributions are based on a candidate’s support for issues important to the profession, not by political affiliation. Every contribution helps create opportunities for meaningful conversations with lawmakers. Those conversations allow NAEA leaders and members to explain how proposed legislation affects taxpayers, tax professionals, and the administration of our tax system.

Many of the nation’s largest professional and trade associations operate federal PACs because they recognize that relationships are essential to effective advocacy. Compared with many professions affected by federal policy, tax professional organizations generally operate smaller PACs than banking or insurance associations. That presents an opportunity for the NAEA. As the only organization exclusively representing enrolled agents before Congress, strengthening our PAC strengthens our ability to advocate effectively on behalf of the profession.

While the PAC is an important part of our advocacy efforts, it also serves to raise the profile and awareness of enrolled agents among legislators and key staff members. The NAEA has earned a reputation as a trusted voice on tax administration and taxpayer representation. A strong PAC, combined with engaged members, grassroots advocacy, and thoughtful policy recommendations, gives the NAEA the tools to influence decisions that affect enrolled agents and the taxpayers they serve.
